The Social Studies Office of the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools has obtained five one million dollar Teaching American History Grants from the United States Department of Education. Teaching American History grants support programs to raise student achievement by improving teacher knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American History.

The local projects provide professional learning programs for SCCPSS teachers to develop the knowledge and skills to teach American History in exciting new ways. Teachers read scholarly historical texts of major events, periods, and ideas in American history, engage in interactions with professional historians, and travel to historic sites. This knowledge enables teachers to deliver better American history instruction, resulting in improved student achievement.
